Nigerian Renaissance

Hon. Gideon Joshua (Prince Bawa Joe)

We have deeper and bigger problems in Nigeria. Kidnappers, ritualists and terrorists only just distract and compound them. These problems may be symptoms or creations of deeper and more fundamental issues. We really have lost our principles and scruples. Our roots have been severed by foreign incursions and replaced with something more vile and evil.

Our traditional belief systems and culture have all been discarded and seen as pagan when elsewhere, they find a way to combine religion with culture. We have bastardized traditional institutions and converted those which were meant as checks and balances to autocratic monarchy into instruments of repression by a privileged few. They have become cults for those seeking power and domination.
We have transformed well meaning elite and egalitarian campus fraternities into cults of thugs and criminals. In the West, those same fraternities help provide structure and meaning to the lives of young men before they are released into society and form a basis for common brotherhood afterwards.
We have the special gift in Nigeria of transforming well meaning political institutions into evil ones. Democratic political parties are now instruments for realizing personal ambition or meeting egotistic requirements. These problems started small long ago and now they are larger than the 800 pound gorilla in the room; there is no more room as some of us have been chased outside to foreign lands We need a renaissance and the renaissance will come from replacing these institutions with those they were originally meant to be. We need better traditional institutions, better fraternities and better political parties. We need to start forming them now as those against us are more powerful than those who are for us. We need to get together to be more powerful than them.
